20,000 Secrets of Tea by Victoria Zak

This book is an incredible introductory to herbalism in general, as well as to the processes of making teas, and washes. The author is engaging and through without going to deep to understand. The book is indexed and categorized well and also in a format that is easy to use and comprehend. In addition to a fairly comprehensive materia medica section, this book also contains an index of ailments and subsequent lists of herbs that might aid in treating them. There are many stories and explanations as well as history and explanations of foreign customs that make the entire reading experience pleasurable and informative. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a beginner to intermediate understanding of herbal medicine. As it is truly, in my opinion, a staple book for any herbal library.

Dorling and Kindersley (DK) Smithsonian Handbooks: Herbs by Lesley Bremness

This book has been on my shelves since I was very young. Ironically enough this was actually the book that got me so very in herbal medicine all those years ago. Its a herbal reference handbook with concise descriptions color photos of numerous herbs as well as tables that display the information in easy to understand terms. This is a must-have in my opinion due to the fact that for beginners it can literally be your best friend. For intermediate to advanced students it might be slightly lacking in depth as it is a handbook not an in-depth materia medica or formulary but for quick and accurate reference of a wide variety of herbs it's a valuable friend. I highly recommend this to beginners and anyone that wants a simple and easy reference guild.
